The obesity epidemic that plagues our country today is startling enough, but when I thought about our future generations I became truly unsettled. Below you will find a list of youth fitness facts.
- Today's generation is the first who will live sicker and die younger than their parents
- Over 80% of our kid's do not believe they are athletes
- The average child gets less than 15 minutes of vigorous activity per day
- The average child spends 20% of their waking time watching tv
- Grade school students are 24% more active than high schoolers
- About 15% of children ages 6-19 are seriously overweight
- The percentage of child obesity has tripled since the 1970's
Become a role model: A simple concept, if you want your children to live an active lifestyle you must lead the way.
Limit TV & Computer Time: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends less than one hour per day. Family activity time anyone?
Health not Competition: Their is a time for competition, but when promoting health and fitness for your child the act of enjoying the activity is more important than winning and losing.
Plan for Activity: As adults we need to put daily activity in our routine, the same applies to our children.
